Mr. Thomas joined Wylie, McBride, Platten & Renner in 2006 as a Contract Representative. Prior to this, Rich spent 33 years in emergency services in both the private and public sectors. His combined experience included positions as an EMT-1, EMT- Paramedic, Paid Call Firefighter, Firefighter and Fire Captain.
After 30 years as a career firefighter, Rich retired in 2006 from the Newport Beach Fire Department, where he held the rank of Fire Captain.
Since coming to Wylie, McBride, Platten and Renner, Rich has assisted firefighters and other public employee organizations throughout Southern California, the Central Coast, Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area with contract negotiations, union administration, and labor management relations.
He also currently sits as the labor representative on the Statewide Training and Education Advisory Committee, thru the California State Fire Marshal’s Office, representing the California Professional Firefighters.

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Rich attended California Lutheran University, Ohlone College, Santa Monica College, Oxnard College and Santa Ana College focusing on general education and fire science. He completed paramedic training at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood California in 1975 and was subsequently certified as a paramedic in both Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
Rich entered the fire service and completed the Basic Fire Academy at Santa Ana College in 1976 and in 1979 completed paramedic training at the University of California Irvine Medical Center to then certify as a paramedic in Orange County, Rich held his California State Paramedic License until 2001.
Rich also had the opportunity to attend numerous courses focusing on local union administration, collective bargaining and grievance handling as a member and leader of the Newport Beach Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 3734
